Aims of the course unit: | ||||
The goal is to familiarize students with theoretical requirements and learn how to use standard air phraseology for VFR flights level with extension of IFR flights. | ||||
Learning outcomes and competences: | ||||
Students will learn to use air phraseology. | ||||

No special requirements. | ||||
Course contents: | ||||
Standard air phraseology used in aircraft, air communication regulations, based on the regulations of the ICAO standards. | ||||
Teaching methods and criteria: | ||||
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures. | ||||
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes: | ||||
The exam is of written (essential) and oral form. | ||||
Controlled participation in lessons: | ||||
The attendance at lectures and exercises is compulsory (80% at the minimum), and it is checked and recorded. The absence (in justifiable cases) can be compensated by personal consultation with the lecturer and elaboration of individually assigned topics and exercises. Individual tasks must be finished and handed in within the course-unit credit week at the latest. | ||||

Lecture | 1. Definitions. Air Traffic Control abbreviations. 2. Q-code groups commonly used in R/T air ground communications. Categories of messages. 3. Transmission of letters. Transmission of numbers. Transmission of time. Transmission technique. 4. Standard words and phrases (relevant R/T). Radiotelephony call sign for aeronautical (ground) stations including use of abbreviated call signs. Radiotelephony call sign for aircraft including use of abbreviated call signs. 5. Transfer of communication. Test procedures including readability scale. Read back and acknowledgement requirements. 6. Radar procedural phraseology I. 7. Radar procedural phraseology II. 8. Radar procedural phraseology III. 9. SELCAL, TCAS, ACARS phraseology and procedures. 10. Relevant weather information terms. 11. Action to be taken in case of communication failure. 12. Distress and urgency procedures. 13. General principles of VHF propagation and allocation of frequencies. |
