Aims of the course unit: | ||||
The course gives the overview of basical physical principles that influence the environment. It is expected, that students will improve their conviction that the respect of the living environment is an integral part of everyday technical work. | ||||
Learning outcomes and competences: | ||||
In lectures students will improve the knowledge of physical areas (light and heat radiation, noise, ionise radiation), which have the direct influence on the formation of the environment. During laboratory measurements students will gain the practical experience with diagnostics and measurements of the noise and ionise radiation. | ||||
Prerequisites: | ||||
Oscillations. Simple harmonic motion. Superposition of harmonic oscillations. Waves. Type of waves: Longitudinal and transversal waves. Plane and spherical waves. Superposition and interference of the waves. Energy levels of the hydrogen atom. Emission and absorption of the light. The multi electron atoms. Nuclear physics. Radioactivity and radioactive decay. Nuclear fission, thermonuclear fusion. |

Course contents: | ||||
The course gives the overview of basical physical principles that influence the environment. The special attention is devoted to the noise and the ionise radiation. The laboratory measurement is focused on the noise in living environment and radioactive radiation. The part of the course is the excursion to the Dukovany Nuclear power plant and a nuclear medicine workplace. | ||||
Teaching methods and criteria: | ||||
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work. | ||||
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes: | ||||
To receive a graded course-unit credit, the student has to take part in all laboratory measurements, hand over the reports and successfully pass the final test. The final test contains the tasks discussed on lectures. The final evaluation will respect laboratory reports (50%) and final test (50%). | ||||
Controlled participation in lessons: | ||||
A teacher checks the attendance on seminars stated in the timetable. The form and the date of the compensation of missed lessons are specified by the teacher. | ||||

Lecture | The essentials of environmental physics. The economic system and the environment. Solar radiation, transport of matter and energy in living environment. Energy for human use. Energy from fossil fuels, energy from renewable sources, conversion of the energy. Nuclear energy. Nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, nuclear waste. Interaction of the radioactive radiation with substance. Ionise radiation detectors. Dosimetry. Quantities and units. Radioactive sources in the living environment. The influence of the ionise radiation on the tissue and a human. Protection against ionise radiation. Noise in living environment. Basic concepts and quantities. Analysis of noise, acoustical spectrometry, human perceptions and noise criteria. Sources of noise, noise propagation in free and close areas. Methods of sound transmission reduction. |

Labs and studios | Absorption of the close area by means of measurement reverberation time. Acoustics power of the machine. Linear attenuation coefficient of gamma radiation. Checking the workplace by dosimeter. Range of the radiation. Checking the homogeneity of walls. |
