Aims of the course unit:
The course deals with explanation of deformation and fracture behaviour of structural materials. The main goal of this course is to provide students with all information concerning principle, way of measurement, as well as practical application of mechanical characteristics.
Learning outcomes and competences:
Basic skills in material engineering are the following: (i) selecting material for the design, (ii) ability to estimate the reason of a device damage as a consequence of material failure, and (iii) evaluating the mechanical and structural properties of material, as well as the knowledge necessary for a testing laboratory manager.
Prerequisites:
Introductory university course in math, chemistry, physics and material science.
Course contents:
First part of the course “Materials Testing” deals with an experimental determination and evaluation of mechanical characteristics and fracture behaviour of metallic and non-metallic structural materials. The course reviews also the current testing technology and examines force applications systems, force measurement, strain measurement, important instrument considerations, equipment for environmental testing, and computers applications for materials testing.
Teaching methods and criteria:
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes:
Examination has an oral part only. For the purpose of this exam a list of questions is published. The knowledge acquired in the course is required for the final state exam in the field of “Material engineering”.
Controlled participation in lessons:
Exercises that are included in this course are compulsory. Absence from the exercises must be properly excused. The course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having worked out at least five individual presentations during the semester.
