Aims of the course unit: | ||||
The aim of the course is to equip students for real-life tasks that arise in a wide range of technical occupations. It is intended to consolidate the knowledge obtained at secondary school and practice all four language skills. | ||||
Learning outcomes and competences: | ||||
Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at intermediate level. | ||||
Prerequisites: | ||||
Course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at the pre-intermediate level / A2 (CEFR) as minimum, as well as with grammar and vocabulary corresponding to the course A3. | ||||

Course contents: | ||||
The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Also dealt with is ESP. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace. | ||||

Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum. | ||||
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes: | ||||
Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having attended the seminars actively, worked out assigned tasks and passed a credit test (at least 30 points out of 50). For the computer assisted part, students are required to collect 60% in the elearning activities and submit an individual written task. There is a possibility for the student to resit the test. | ||||
Controlled participation in lessons: | ||||
Attendance at seminars is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss two language seminars and one seminar of computer assisted language learning. In well-founded cases, extra absences can be made up for after consulting the situation with the teacher. | ||||

Language exercise | 1. U5: Technology, information. Comparatives and superlatives, question tags. 2. U5: Asking experts. Polite requests. Present and answer questions on your area of expertise. Explain and solve problems. 3. U5: Talk about inventions. Advantages/disadvantages. 4. U6: Real conditionals, hypothetical conditional: present/future, giving news. 5 U6: -ing/-ed adjectives, verb-noun collocations, life events. 6. U6: Talk about emotions, discuss what you would do in different situations. 7. U7: Success: verb phrases. Present perfect simple versus continuous. 8. U7: Present and past ability. Qualifications. 9. U7: Give/clarify opinions. Describe an achievement. 10. U8: Communities, social situations. 11. U8: Articles and quantifiers, relative clauses. 12. U8: Internet, real-world/online activities. 13. Credit test. |
