Aims of the course unit: | ||||
The aim of the course is to teach the language skills needed by university students and company employees in a range of engineering branches. | ||||
Learning outcomes and competences: | ||||
Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures necessary for professional communication at upper-intermediate level. | ||||
Prerequisites: | ||||
The course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at intermediate level (CEF B1). | ||||

The course covers core language and skills that students need to communicate successfully in technical specialisations. | ||||

Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum. | ||||

To pass this course it is necessary, apart from active participation in the class and individual home preparation, to pass the credit test, which is divided into three parts written on pre-set dates throughout the semester. The maximum score is 50 points and in order to fulfil the credit requirements students must earn a minimum of 30 points. In case this benchmark is not achieved, there is a possibility for the student to resit the test. | ||||
Controlled participation in lessons: | ||||
Attendance at seminars is compulsory and is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss two seminars. | ||||

Language exercise | 1. Introduction, U1 - technical description, past tenses and questions revision 2. U1 - technical article, linking 3. U2 - function of a device, passive forms revision 4. U2 - describing properties, modal verbs 5. 1st semester test, U3 - expressing probability, automotive engineering text 6. U3 - note-taking, lecture, summarizing, linkers of contrast, relative clauses 7. U4 - engineering article, physics and mechanical vocabulary, phrasal verbs 8. U4 - instructions and feedback, conjunctions while/as 9. 2nd semester test, U5 - cause and effect links, describing a process 10. U5 - flow diagram, lecture, gerunds and nouns 11. U6 - degrees of certainty, plans, future forms 12. U6 - participating in a meeting, chairing a meeting 13. 3rd semester test |
