Machine Design and Machine Elements (FSI-CKP)

Academic year 2026/2027
Supervisor: prof. Ing. Martin Hartl, Ph.D.
Supervising institute: ÚK all courses guaranted by this institute
Teaching language: Czech
Course type: departmental course
Aims of the course unit:

The aim of the course is to teach students the basics of strength and structural design of machine components, enabling them to independently assess simple machine assemblies. After completing the course, students will understand the causes of component failure under static and fatigue loads and will be able to design and verify the integrity of basic machine elements, including axles and shafts, joints, springs, bearings, and other components.

Learning outcomes and competences:

Prerequisites:

Course contents:

The course focuses on the design and assessment of basic machine components and joints, considering their function, strength, and service life. The aim is to integrate knowledge from mechanics, elasticity and strength of materials, and materials engineering to master the methodology of structural and strength design of machine parts, supports, and joints, with an emphasis on engineering practice.

Teaching methods and criteria:

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes:

The classification is based on two written tests at predetermined dates, usually in the middle and end of the semester. The control test consists of theoretical questions and calculation examples. The condition for obtaining the credit is to obtain at least 50% of points from both tests. The resulting score corresponds to the ECTS classification. The student is allowed to write a correction test in the date specified by the teacher, usually in the exam period. Participation in lectures is recommended, attendance at seminars is compulsory - two absences are allowed.

Controlled participation in lessons:

Type of course unit:
    Lecture  13 × 3 hrs. optionally
    Computer-assisted exercise  13 × 2 hrs. compulsory
