Engineering Materials and Heat Treatment (FSI-HMT)

Academic year 2026/2027
Supervisor: prof. Ing. Libor Pantělejev, Ph.D.
Supervising institute: ÚMVI all courses guaranted by this institute
Teaching language: Czech
Course type: departmental course
Aims of the course unit:

In this course, students are expected to develop the ability to select and apply structural materials to achieve desired performance properties. The course builds on basic knowledge from materials-related subjects (thermodynamics, metallurgy, materials testing, the relationship between microstructure and resulting properties, and heat treatment) and complements it with engineering applications.

Completion of the course should enable students to make an informed selection of suitable materials for specific applications, including the design of their heat treatment or surface modification. At the same time, students should acquire the skills to identify and address common practical problems related to materials and their processing.

Learning outcomes and competences:

Prerequisites:

The course builds on knowledge acquired in basic courses covering material testing, the relationship between structure and resulting properties, heat treatment, and phase transformations.

Course contents:

The course “Engineering Materials and Heat Treatment” is designed to introduce students to metallic and non-metallic structural and tool materials currently used in mechanical engineering. The instruction focuses on the relationships between chemical composition, material properties, structure, and their applications. Emphasis is placed on linking theoretical knowledge with practical skills to solve common problems related to materials science encountered in engineering practice.

The course covers the following topics:
- Influence of metallurgy on the properties and structure of steels and cast irons
- Phase transformations during heat treatment
- Structural steels
- Weldability of steels
- Mechanical properties of steels
- Cast steels and cast irons
- Tool materials

Teaching methods and criteria:

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes:

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having attended 100% seminars with active participation and worked out a paper regarding the presented topics. Excused absence has to be compensated for via working out an alternative assignment. The exam has a written and an oral part. The written part is focused on four of the main topics presented in the lectures. In the oral part of the exam a student answers additional and complementary questions.
Missed lessons may be compensated for by the agreement with the teacher.

Controlled participation in lessons:
