Testing of Materials and Structures (FSI-WZM)

Academic year 2026/2027
Supervisor: prof. Ing. Libor Pantělejev, Ph.D.
Supervising institute: ÚMVI all courses guaranted by this institute
Teaching language: Czech
Course type: departmental course
Aims of the course unit:

The course aims to familiarize students with the procedures used in mechanical testing laboratories and nondestructive testing laboratories, and to highlight the practical significance of these methods.
Students will acquire fundamental knowledge in the evaluation of structural materials based on their mechanical properties and nondestructive testing techniques.

Learning outcomes and competences:

Prerequisites:

Introductory university course in math, chemistry, physics and material science.

Course contents:

View over mechanical, technological and non-destructive test methods for quality estimation of structural materials and structural element. Laboratory – accredited laboratories, certification and standards. Material testing; estimation of mechanical and technological properties. Test results evaluation. Non-destructive testing of materials.

Teaching methods and criteria:

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes:

Credit Requirements
To obtain credit for the course, students must attend all practical sessions and complete laboratory reports in accordance with the instructor’s guidelines.

Examination
The examination consists of two parts: a written test and an oral examination. In the written part, students answer three questions: one theoretical topic, one problem discussed during practical sessions, and one problem not covered in class. Lecture notes and laboratory reports may be used during this portion of the exam.

During the oral examination, students explain the theoretical topic and briefly describe their approach to solving each problem, including the relevant formulas and assumptions.

The instructor evaluates the student’s level of understanding and fulfillment of course requirements according to the ECTS grading scale.

Attendance at practical sessions is mandatory, and any absence must be properly excused. In the event of an absence, the student must complete the laboratory report for the missed session and demonstrate to the instructor sufficient understanding of the topic.
