Aims of the course unit:
The aim of the course is to teach the language skills needed by university students and company employees in a range of engineering branches.
Learning outcomes and competences:
Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures necessary for professional communication at upper-intermediate level (Common European Framework of Reference B2 level).
Prerequisites:
The course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at intermediate level, as well as with grammar and vocabulary corresponding to the course A5.

Course contents:
The course covers core language and skills that students need to communicate successfully in technical specialisations.
Teaching methods and criteria:
Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes:
To pass this course it is necessary, apart from active participation in the class and individual home preparation, to pass the credit test, which is divided into three parts written on pre-set dates throughout the semester. The maximum score is 50 points and in order to fulfil the credit requirements students must earn a minimum of 30 points. In case this benchmark is not achieved, there is a possibility for the student to resit the test.
Controlled participation in lessons:
Attendance at seminars is compulsory and is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss two seminars.

    Language exercise 1. Introduction, U7 - describing developments, comparison and contrasting
2. U7 - explaining technology, phrases introducing explanations/analogies
3. U8 - speculating about past, present perfect passive modal, logistics
4. U8 - indirect questions, degrees of agreement, health and safety
5. 1st semester test, U9 - proposing, recommending, meeting with client
6. U9 - defining relative clauses, stipulating conditions, work contracts
7. U10- technical writing, report format
8. U10 - collaborative problem-solving, participating in a meeting (2)
9. 2nd semester test, U11 -data organisation, causation, third conditional
10.U11 - summarising, writing an abstract, phrases to signal communicative intent
11. U12 - sequence of events, perfect participle, past necessity and ability
12. U12 - debating, persuading, phrasal verbs
