Process and Power Engineering and Legislation (FSI-KEL)

Academic year 2023/2024
Supervisor: doc. Ing. Martin Pavlas, Ph.D.
Supervising institute: ÚPI all courses guaranted by this institute
Teaching language: Czech
Course type: departmental course
Aims of the course unit:
- To get acquainted with essential parts of legislation related to design, construction and operation of process and power engineering units and industrial plants.
- To become able to apply gained knowledge to a set of typical process units and industrial plants.

Learning outcomes and competences:
Students will learn essential parts of legislation related to design and operation of process units. They will learn to apply gained knowledge of regulations in engineering practice. Students will be able to evaluate proces parameters with respect to related legislation.
Prerequisites:
Mass and heat balance calculations, mechanisms of pollutant emissions formation, design of process and power systems, statistics.
Course contents:
Planning and design of process and power systems require knowledge of both current and upcoming legislative limitations. In the course, students will get acquainted with essential parts of legislation related to design, construction and operation of process and power engineering units and industrial plants. They will learn about regulations for environmental protection, the use of natural resources and proces safety. A part of the course is also devoted to legal liability, protection of intellectual property and final products compliance with legislation.
Teaching methods and criteria:
The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes:

SEMINARS: Regular and active attendance is obligatory. A minimum number of 20 points from course assignments and the final presentation must be reached.

EXAM: The exam is both written and oral. It must be passed successfully, i.e. a minimum number of 30 points must be reached.

FINAL GRADE: The final grade is based on the sum of points obtained from the course assignments and the exam part. The course evaluation follows a standard procedure (less than 50 points - F, [50,60) points - E, [60,70) points - D, [70,80) points - C, [80,90) points - B, 90 points and more - A).

Controlled participation in lessons:
Participation in the seminar is regularly checked. In justified cases, an absence at a seminar may be substituted by an individual project (in the form of practical case study).
Type of course unit:
    Lecture  13 × 2 hrs. optionally
    Exercise  13 × 1 hrs. compulsory
