Aims of the course unit:
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to historical contexts leading to establishment of the European Union (EU) and to development of the legislative environment in the EU. Attention is paid mainly to the fields related to customer protection, environment protection and associated duties of producers.
Students learn about legal regulations and harmonized standars that set the rules for introduction of products to market or into operation.
Learning outcomes and competences:
Students learn about technical-organizational procedures forming the basis of compulsory or voluntary demonstration of conformity and also about the basic principles of technical normalization and its application in technical practice on the basic level as well as on the European and global level. Students will learn to work with technical regulations, to complete the sets of technical documentation necessary for compulsory assessment of conformity. The course also includes use of technical normalization and its basic methods in technical practice, from the viewpoint of elimination of technical obstacles to trade, safety and health protection, protection of customer and of the environment and mainly determination of the optimal quality of products, processes and services.
Prerequisites:
General knowledge about the European Union.
Course contents:
Presentation of European legislation, technical specifications and systems of management including their applications in the fields of conformity assessment (testing), accreditation, metrology and technical normalization.
The course introduces the students to the technical-organizational procedures forming the basis of compulsory or voluntary demonstration of conformity. The obtained knowledge will enable them to prepare the processes and quality systems and their documentation for evaluation in the form of an audit or to work as auditors of processes and quality systems.
After successful completion of the course, the students will understand the technical requirements on products and processes leading to assessment of conformity of products with the requirements of the harmonized legal regulations of the EU. They will master the procedures of internal management of production for introduction of safe products to the market or into operation and procedures of certification of products, processes and services.
Teaching methods and criteria:
The course is taught in the form of lectures presenting the basic principles and theory of the given discipline. Presentation and defence of a semestral project. According to the possibility of teaching can be organized lectures for students by practitioners and excursions to companies focused on activities related to the course content.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes:
Students must defend a semestral project on a given topic.
Controlled participation in lessons:
Lectures are voluntary, presentation of the semestral project is compulsory.
