This paper deals with a new stochastic heuristic searching algorithm inspired by the fundamental biological principles of survival. It presents a very promising version of a commonly known genetic algorithm denoted as GAHC and an algorithm denoted as HC12. Global optimization properties of these algorithms are illustrated with several nonlinear optimization problems. These problems are also solved by sophisticated solvers in general algebraic modelling system to increase objectivity and to compare different methods. Presented optimization algorithms are implemented in our own optimization toolbox GATE in Matlab environment.

Chance constrained stochastic programming is applied to a problem concerning an optimal design of beam dimensions and its reliability. The corresponding mathematical model involves an ODE-type constraint, an uncertain parameter related to the external load and one individual chance constraint. An appropriate penalty function is used to reformulate a nonlinear chance constrained stochastic program. An a posteriori check of reliability of the beam is done using simulation techniques in Probabilistic Design System in ANSYS.

An engineering problem concerning an optimal design of frame structure dimensions is discussed. The corresponding mathematical model leads to the ordinary differential equations constrained nonlinear deterministic program. A computational scheme for this type of problems is proposed using finite difference method. Two computing systems GAMS and ANSYS with two difference discretization methods (finite difference and finite element method) are compared and similar results are obtained.

The applicability of stochastic programming models and methods to PDE constrained stochastic optimization problem is discussed. The problem concerning the transverse vibration of a string is chosen. Therefore, the corresponding mathematical model involves a PDE-type constraint and an uncertain parameter related to the external load. A computational scheme for this type of problems is proposed, including discretization methods for random elements (scenario based two-stage stochastic programming) and the PDE constraint (finite difference method). Several deterministic reformulations are presented and compared using numerical and graphical results.

The purpose of the paper is to discuss the applicability of stochastic programming models and methods to civil engineering design problems. In cooperation with experts in civil engineering, the problem concerning an optimal design of beam dimensions has been chosen. The corresponding mathematical model involves an ODE-type constraint, uncertain parameter related to the material characteristics and multiple criteria. As a result, a multi-criteria stochastic nonlinear optimization model is obtained. It has been shown that two-stage stochastic programming offers a promising approach to solving similar problems. A computational scheme for this type of problems is proposed, including discretization methods for random elements and ODE constraint. An approximation is derived to implement the mathematical model and solve it in GAMS. The solution quality is determined by an interval estimate of the optimality gap computed by a Monte Carlo bounding technique. The parametric analysis of a multi-criteria model results in efficient frontier computation. Furthermore, a progressive hedging algorithm is implemented and tested for the selected problem in view of the future possibilities of parallel computing of large engineering problems. Finally, two discretization methods are compared by using GAMS and ANSYS.
