    The vast majority of steel production is processed by hot rolling nowadays. The steel is heated to high tem-peratures during the process and a crust of iron oxides (scales) is formed on the surface. This crust must be re-moved prior the rolling. The removal takes place in descalers, a row of high pressure flat jet nozzles, where the jets create a water knife that break the crust and washes the scales away. Heat transfer and fluid flow laboratory in cooperation with Institute of Geonics has been developing a nozzle with a pulsating jet that would increase the mechanical (water hammer) effect on the crust of the scales. So far a new fourth generation of hydrodynamic nozzle was developed. The nozzle generates an oscillating solid jet from side to side while maintaining the flatness of the jet. The mechanism of the oscillation is caused by the internal structure of the nozzle without any moving mechanical parts. The efficiency of the hydrodynamic nozzle is studied by the impact pressure measurements and erosion measurements. Comparison is made with conventional descaling nozzle with similar operating parameters.

    High energetic water jets sprayed from nozzles are used for scale removal. Special nozzles with flat and very narrow jets for high feed pressure are used. This process, called descaling, is used in hot rolling, for example. A number of jets must be used to cover the total width of a rolled strip. High quality and homogeneity of the descaling process is required. A row of high pressure descaling nozzles is often used. This paper focuses on the area where water streams from adjacent nozzles interact. Water impact measurements were taken for several nozzle configurations and the measuring technique with the results obtained is presented. The water impact pressure for multiple nozzles was computed and the results were compared to the measurements.

    The production and processing of high-quality grades of steel are connected with the oxidation at high temperatures. Unwanted scales are formed on the steel surface, which is usually heated to over 900 °C. These scales are often removed by hydraulic descaling during the production. In most cases where long, flat products are produced, one row of descaling nozzles is used. As these flat jet nozzles are arranged in a row, the water spray from one nozzle interferes with the spray from the neighboring nozzles. This zone is called an overlap area and often even more scales remain here after the descaling process. An increased amount of the scales left behind results in a lower quality of a final product. A typical configuration with an inclination and twist angle of 15° was studied. Heat-transfer coefficients (HTC) and surface temperatures were measured in the overlap area and compared with the values obtained from undisturbed areas. It was found that the overlap area is grossly overcooled. The results were compared with a new configuration, where the twist angle was changed to 0°, and it was found that the overcooling was significantly reduced. The temperature measurement showed that an increased thickness of the scales in the overlap area can also be caused by surface overcooling because the scales change the material properties with the temperature, and they are therefore more difficult to remove. The new configuration with the twist angle of 0° seems promising for improving the quality of hydraulic descaling.

    Analytical solutions are much less computationally intensive than numerical ones, and moreover, they are more accurate because they do not contain numerical errors; however, they can only describe a small group of simple heat-conduction prob- lems. A numerical simulation of heat conduction is often used as it is able to describe complex problems, but its computational time is much longer, especially for unsteady multidimensional models with temperature-dependent material properties. After a discretization using the implicit scheme, the heat-conduction problem can be described with N non-linear equations, where N is the large number of the elements of the discretized model. This set of equations can be efficiently solved with an iteration of the line-by-line method, based on the heat-flux superposition, although the computational procedure is strictly serial. This means that no parallel computation can be done, which is strictly required when a graphics card is used to accelerate the computation. This paper describes a multidimensional numerical model of unsteady heat conduction solved with the line-by-line method and a modification of this method for a highly parallel computation. An enormous increase in the speed is demonstrated for the modified line-by-line method accelerated on the graphics card, and the durations of the computations for various mesh sizes are compared with the original line-by-line method.

    Effects of titania nanoparticles on heat transfer performance of spray cooling with full cone nozzle, Elsevier Ltd.

    Spray cooling using aqueous titania nanofluids was studied. The temperatures of a testing plate under various spraying conditions were first measured; an inverse heat conduction technique was then applied to convert these measured temperatures into heat transfer coefficients (HTCs). It was found that the HTC increased logarithmically with the volume flux, but was decreased with the increase of the nanoparticle fraction. A correlation analysis was performed to quantify the HTC reduction caused by the increase of nanoparticles, and reconfirmed that the major cause for the HTC reduction was the difference in the impact (or impingement) behavior between solid nanoparticles and fluid droplets. A comparison study of the present findings with the previous published results was also performed and indicated that all results compared were consistent to each other based on the similar spray cooling conditions with different nanofluids or nozzles. The effects by using aquatic titania nanofluids instead of aquatic alumina nanofluids and by using full-cone nozzle instead of solid jet nozzle were specifically assessed and the associated rationales for the differences in these effects were given
