Advantages of reputable sophisticated software systems for thermal-hydraulic process equipment design are unquestionable particularly in the design, rating or simulation of conventional (i.e. standardized design types) heat exchangers. However, a lot of heat exchangers used for specific purposes of process and power systems are commonly designed as partially (more or less) no standardized (or unconventional) design types. Which is capability of the above mentioned software systems for thermal-hydraulic calculation of such more or less unconventional heat exchanger types? The purpose of the paper is trying to answer this question and to summarize, compare and discuss features of the three most reputable software packages at present via analysis of specific industrial heat transfer equipment containing some unconventional (or non-standardized) components.
