What the Combustion Engineer Gains from CFD Modeling: Gas Furnace, WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
journal article in Web of Science

Combustion engineers require correct predictions of trends, especially in cases when computational fluid dynamics is applied for troubleshooting, scale-up, or decision support in the design phase. Validation of models by parametric studies and in a large-scale furnace is rare and much needed. This is the primary objective of this work. Similarly, combustion engineers require the prediction of heat loads in specific parts of a boiler or furnace. The second objective of this work is to provide exactly such type of validation for a megawatt-scale burner. Both cases use natural gas fuel. The models applied to perform the predictions are typical of practicing combustion engineers, providing fast turnaround times. The results provide a perspective on the performance of models serving as workhorses in engineering companies.

Results from CFD simulations of swirling non-premixed gas flame using a low-NOx gas burner are presented and compared to experimental data measured during a testing campaign in a semi-industrial water-cooled combustion chamber. It is shown, how results are sensitive to the mixing rate constant of EDM, which is employed in a simulation of swirling turbulent diffusion flame. Specifically, temperatures are overestimated with the constant being set to 4 (the default value in Ansys Fluent), which leads to false prediction of NOx formation. Temperature peaks are reduced by lowering the mixing rate constant. An acceptable agreement with measured outlet and peak flame temperatures is achieved, when the constant is set to 0.6. With this value, however, highly increased concentrations of unburned species are reported at the outlet. Predicted values deviate from the measurements about three orders of magnitude. Based on the concentrations of unburned species and oxygen in the flue gas at the outlet, the best results are obtained with the constant 1.2.

New Numerical Treatment of Source Term in Convective Transfer of Heat between Fluid and Porous Solid Matrix, Emerald Group Publishing
journal article in Web of Science

This paper reports a novel formulation of convective heat transfer source term for the case of flow through porous medium. The new approximation is shown to provide superior performance over standard explicit and implicit formulations. The novel formulation is obtained by analytical solution of an idealized dual problem. Computations are performed by dedicated tool for fixed bed combustion named GRATECAL and developed by the authors. However, the proposed method can also be applied to other porous media flow problems. The new source term formulation is unconditionally stable and it respects exponential decay of temperature difference between the fluid and porous solid medium. The results of this work are applicable in the simulation of convective heat transfer between the fluid and porous medium. Applications include e.g. fixed bed combustion, catalytic reactors and lime kilns. The reported solution is believed to be original. It will be useful to all involved in numerical simulations of fluid flow in porous media with convective heat transfer.

The main aim of research was investigation of combustion operating parameters and burner’s constructional parameters on the formation of nitrogen oxides. The tests were performed using the burner prototype with the maximal capacity of 1.5 MW. The burner is both fuel-staged and air-staged. During the testing campaign, various geometries of secondary nozzles and their position towards the burner quarl, and various geometries of the so-called swirl generator were investigated.

CFD Process Modeling of Industrial Calcination of Diatomite, WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA
journal article in Web of Science

Calcination of diatomite is an expensive process frequently resulting in products with unpredictable structure. Alternatively, calcination in swirling flow is an energy-saving option. Computational fluid dynamics modeling of an experimental calcination process unit is presented. Experimental results and systematic collection of process data were used to define boundary condition for steady-state and transient simulation runs. The comparison of experimental and simulation results shows the complexity of the calcination process. The results can be used for further process optimization.
