This paper presents computed dependencies of signal amplification of detected electrons on the water vapor pressure in a variable pressure SEM using the EOD software equipped with a Monte Carlo plug-in. We analyze the amplification at selected energies of signal electrons going through a high-pressure water vapor and total signal amplification by including a realistic simulation of the secondary emission from sample. The results are compared with experimental measurements and the dependencies of published analytical models.

The paper surveys new features of the EOD program, a complete workplace for the design of electron and ion microscopes. The extensions of the program for space charge computations, interaction with gases in the specimen chamber and misalignments are handled as plug-ins, keeping the program as a single unit. The current status of the tolerancing plug-in is described in more detail.

The paper presents numerical simulations of a hairpin thermionic electron gun, an electron source for an electron-beam welding machine. New algorithm for the simulation of emission limited by space charge has been developed and implemented in the program EOD, which enables us to simulate the optical system as whole. The results of the simulation were compared with the experimental measurements.

The paper describes the basic features of a new program EOD (Electron Optical Design), primarily intended for the design of systems of electron lenses and deflectors for scanning and transmission electron microscopes. A very accurate first-order finiteelement method in graded topologically regular meshes provides the fields. Electron optical properties can be analyzed from standard paraxial trajectories and aberration integrals for combined lens and deflection systems or, for a general system, from the results of very accurate ray-tracing. The advantage of EOD is that it includes a user-friendly interface, simplifying the output of results and the whole design procedure. EOD is used by undergraduate and postgraduate students at ISI and TU Brno.
