Teaching Profile

Study gauranteed by the institute

The field of "process engineering" is first introduced to graduate students in the first year of studies for master degree (equivalent to fourth year of the five years’ engineering study as used before). In this year they receive the necessary theoretical background to master basic subjects of process engineering.

The theoretic knowledge is utilised during the fifth year in the study of subjects providing a wide scope of information and knowledge focused on practical fields of process engineering as investment, operation, project management process design and process control, methodologies for energy consumption minimisation and optimisation as well as emission reduction. Methodologies of risks assessment and hazard identification connected to the operation of complex process (and other) units are also introduced to the students, as well as waste processing technologies and waste recycling.

Scientific Profile

Projects solved by the institute

Scientific and research activities are focused mainly on the following areas:

new and modern methods for waste to energy

optimisation of technological processes and individual devices

minimisation of energy consumption and production of emissions in the process industry

broad computational support (development and utilisation of simulation software packages, application of CFD, optimisation algorithms etc.)

extending the experimental laboratory and research facilities in the fields of combustion and waste to energy processes, and off-gas cleaning

Specification of selected profile activities:

complex solution approach to waste treatment and reuse

thermal processing of wastes with heat recovery (waste to energy):

treatment of municipal and industrial wastes including hazardous wastes

utilisation of wastes as alternative fuels for production of building materials (e.g. treatment of solid municipal wastes and sludges from wastewater treatment plants in cement kilns)

new units for treatment of volatile organic compounds and CO diluted in air

new methods for off-gas cleaning (e.g. a novel device for wet scrubbing and utilisation of a catalytic filter for destruction of dioxins/furanes)

exploitation of gasification in waste treatment (also mixed with biomass)

prediction of pollutant emissions (e.g. NOx)

external power sources (utility systems) and cogeneration

energy consumption minimisation in technological processes

computations and optimisation of heat transfer equipment (heat exchangers, process furnaces, specific devices, special combustion chambers)

process integration

non-thermal waste treatment

research and development of mixing devices
