Teaching Profile

The Institute of Automation and Computer Science provides fundamental university information technology, automation and regulation courses obligatory for students of all specialisations.

The Institute also organizes and provides three-year Bachelor's degree programme in the specialisation Applied Computer Science and Control and its three-year Follow-up Master’s degree programme and two-year Follow-up Master’s degree programme in the specialisation Engineering Computer Science and Automation that follows a Bachelor's degree Mechanical Engineering programme.

The programmes are of a strong interdisciplinary nature, which gives the graduates the chance of finding jobs in a broad spectrum of organisations. They are leaving the university as experts able to apply state-of-the-art information technologies, design and build information and control systems, employ means of automation in controlling and regulating technological processes.

The study programmes include courses in microprocessor technology, computer hardware and software and networks, theory of automatic control and program development for information and control systems. Students will get familiar with specialised software used in the current practice both general, such as operating systems including those for networks, database systems, program development environments, and specialised (CASE, optimisation and simulation software products, expert systems). Tutorials take place in computer rooms and laboratories. Excursions to leading industrial companies and universities in the Czech Republic and abroad are included in the courses.

The Institute also educates Ph.D. students in the fields of Technical Cybernetics, Design and Process Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, and Mathematical Engineering.

Scientific Profile

Main research activities are focused on the following areas:

Mobile robot construction and control (omni directional wheels, electrical sensors, control and navigation systems, trajectory generation, motion control),

mechatronics (identification and simulation of dynamic system parameters via genetic algorithm and neural networks),

automatic control systems (linear and non-linear automatic control, digital automatic control, binary and optimal control, robust control, discrete PSD controllers, large-scale systems),

mathematical modelling and methods in project management (processes of identification, multi-criteria selection, scheduling, monitoring and realisation of projects),

production management (scheduling and lot sizing in flow shops and job shops),

soft computing (fuzzy logic, neural networks, evolutionary and hybrid algorithms, knowledge based reasoning).

Additionally, the Institute is responsible for design, development and administration of the Faculty network.

The Institute organises the International Mendel Conference on Soft Computing every year.

Professional Collaboration

The Institute of Automation and Computer Science co-operates with leading Czech and foreign companies in the information and automation technology markets. Solutions to concrete practical problems are supplied to such companies in the form of consulting, work on degree projects, and on particular orders etc. Such companies support the Institute of Automation and Computer Science by supplying it with state-of-the-art devices, computers and software. The Institute of Automation and Computer Science also co-operates with a number of renowned foreign universities such as Technische Universität Wien (Austria), Technische Universität Graz (Austria), McMaster University Hamilton (Canada), University of Sheffield (Great Britain), University of Applied Sciences Zittau (Germany), University of Split (Croatia).
